Mountain Home’s summertime kickoff to the weekend has a new name and a new music coordinator (Ron Shire).

“Mountain Home’s Friday Night Block Party,” known in years past as “Friday Night on the Square,” begins this Friday night at the Baxter County Courthouse square under the supervision of Ron Shire of Yellville. Rio is this summer’s first featured band, and will perform their fusion of rock, county and bluegrass at 7 p.m.

“In the 1960s and 70s, neighborhoods had community block parties,” Shire said. “Everyone got together once a week, got to know each other and have a good time. That’s the idea, bringing the community together.”

Shire took the reins of what would become the Friday Night Block Party late last year after resigning from a similar position with Yellville’s Music on the Square program. Shire spent 16 years organizing Music on the Square, which draws hundreds of music fans to the Marion County Courthouse square on Saturday nights in the summer.

In addition to the name change, the Block Party will offer food trucks and door prizes for attendees.

“We want to cater the event to the community,” he said. “Everyone’s been working hard all week, we want everyone to relax, come out and have a meal. Take a break from the television that night and come give it a try.”

Musical acts will take the stage at 7 p.m. and play until 9 p.m. or later, Shire said. Attendees will receive raffle tickets for door prizes, which will be awarded during intermission.

“The parents get a ticket, the kids get a ticket, the baby in the stroller gets a ticket,” Shire said. “Everyone who comes out gets a ticket and has a chance to win something. We want to make it a fun evening.”

Shire also plans several theme nights this summer. July 14 is scheduled to be Hawaiian Night, complete with leis and a Polynesian dance club. Arkansas State University-Mountain Home will sponsor College Night on July 28. The Mellow Mountain Band, whose members graduated from ASUMH, will be the musical act that night.

Shire said he’s always looking for Block Party sponsors or donations to be used as door prizes. Event staff will pass a hat through the crowd for donations, he said.

“All this money goes back into the community to cover our expenses,” Shire said.

Shire mentioned several volunteers that will help him keep things moving this summer. Hank and Eva Boonstra will be lending a hand, with their granddaughters Michaela and Marisa handing out the tickets for door prizes. Mark Kapshandy will help out with weekly media coverage of the musical acts.

Shire also said he wished to thank Mayor Joe Dillard and his office manager, Tina Gregory, for their work on the summer program.

“I always tell volunteers when they’re sweating in 90-degree heat, if you take care of the people, then everything will be OK,” Shire said. “What makes an evening a success is the people that come out.”
